Homemade SPF Lip Balm

All natural ingredients - no toxic chemicals

Homemade SPF lip balm in a glass jar with natural ingredients including coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, and zinc oxide on a kitchen counter
Ingredients
32g Coconut Oil
15g Shea Butter
20g Beeswax
15g Cocoa Butter
8g Pure Zinc Oxide Powder, non-nano, uncoated for SPF*
Instructions
  1. 1
Melt the Base - Add the coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax, and cocoa butter to a double boiler… or a heat-safe glass bowl set over a pot of simmering water.
  2. 2
Stir occasionally until everything is fully melted and smooth. Keep water out of the mixture… no shortcuts here.
  3. 3
Cool Slightly - Remove from heat and give it a quick stir with a silicone spatula. Pour into a glass measuring cup and let cool slightly.… but don’t wander off. This mixture firms up fast and you want it still pourable. (If you used a glass bowl for melting, cool until you can safely touch the bowl)
  4. 4
Add Zinc Oxide (SPF) - Add 7–8g of non-nano zinc oxide powder. Using a sifter, slowly sprinkle it into the mixture while whisking continuously so it blends evenly. (Avoid inhaling the powder… a mask is a smart move here.)
  5. 5
Pour Into Containers - Carefully pour the mixture into your lip balm tubes or tins. A small funnel may make this step less messy.
  6. 6
Let them sit undisturbed until completely cooled and solid.
  7. 7
Label, Store, and Enjoy - Label your containers with the date and ingredients… trust me, you’ll forget later. Store in a cool, dry place and enjoy soft, hydrated lips anytime.
Notes:

Important Disclaimer

SPF levels in homemade products cannot be accurately measured without lab testing.

For best results, apply generously and reapply often to help protect your lips from sun exposure. Lip balm wears off quickly with talking, eating, and drinking… so don’t be shy about reapplying.

You can add up to 20% of the total weight of the mixture as non-nano zinc oxide, but be aware...the more zinc, the more white residue it will leave on your lips!

Texture Tips

Want it firmer or softer? Adjust the ratio of beeswax to oils.

More beeswax = firmer balm

Less beeswax = softer, more glide

Want it tinted - add beet root powder or cocoa powder
